Course Overview

This 2-day technical course addresses wireless design for IoT applications, including IoT standards, choice of a suitable wireless protocol, antennas and tuning, implementation case studies, integration, self-EMC issues and key receiver and transmitter measurements.

The course begins with an RF design perspective on encoding data onto an RF carrier. This includes the concepts of frequency, amplitude and phase modulation viewed through IQ and eye diagrams, leading to an appreciation of the way that GFSK, QPSK, QAM, OFDM work.

There are perhaps too many choices now available in the IoT marketplace and so we review and contrast the strengths and weaknesses of popular options including : WiFi, Bluetooth, Zigbee, Sigfox, LoRa, Z-Wave, and cellular offerings such as NB-IoT and GPRS. We also consider the crowded 2.4GHz ISM band, which inevitably suffers collisions between co-located systems. When two separate radio standards co-exist inside the same product, extra effort is needed to keep them from interfering with each other.

The course continues with an overview of the radio architectures commonly employed. This helps in understanding their vulnerabilities when performing radio tests and debugging implementation issues. This is followed by a review of IoT antennas, which are primarily small and cheap. Getting the best out of them requires careful siting and matching. Printed antenna design examples and some real-world examples of the pitfalls of integration are presented and discussed.

Various case studies are then presented with product examples employing Bluetooth, WiFi, Zigbee, Sigfox, GPS – including lessons learned, particularly about self-interference between circuit blocks and the radio section. Finally, the course concludes with an overview of validating receive and transmit performance of IoT systems using RF test equipment.

The course also includes some practical demonstrations to help reinforce concepts and performed using the latest RF and microwave test and measurement instruments. The course is delivered in partnership with leading test equipment manufacturer Rohde & Schwarz at their UK office. Throughout the course, there will be plenty of opportunities to ask the instructor questions to help clarify understanding. You are welcome to bring along your designs for class or private discussion with the instructor. The course instructor brings over 30 years of experience in RF, wireless and microwave design, development, test and measurement.

Prerequisites

Although there are no formal prerequisites for this course, an ability to absorb and understand technical concepts is essential together with a desire to learn more about the topics covered. A technical background is desirable in order to derive maximum benefit from the course.

Those taking the course would normally be qualified to degree-level or have equivalent experience in an engineering, physics or mathematics-related subject. Cancellation

A cancellation fee of 20% will apply for cancellations received 7-14 days before the start of a course. Cancellations received less than 7 days before are not refundable. Substitute delegates can be made any time before a course starts.
