Wireless Design for Internet of Things (IoT) Applications
This 2-day technical course addresses wireless design for Internet of Things (IoT) applications, including IoT standards, choice of a suitable wireless protocol, antennas and tuning, implementation case studies, integration and self-EMC issues and key receiver and transmitter measurements.
The course begins with a radio frequency (RF) design perspective on encoding data onto an RF carrier. This includes the concepts of frequency, amplitude and phase modulation viewed through the IQ and eye diagrams, leading to an appreciation of the way that GFSK, QPSK, QAM, OFDM work.
There are perhaps too many choices now available in the IoT marketplace and so we review and contrast the strengths and weaknesses of popular options, including : WiFi, Bluetooth, Zigbee, Sigfox, LoRa, Z-Wave, and cellular offerings such as NB-IoT and GPRS. We also consider the crowded 2.4GHz ISM band, which inevitably suffers collisions between co-located systems. But when two separate radio standards co-exist inside the same product, extra effort is needed to keep them from interfering with each other.
The course continues with an overview of the radio architectures commonly employed. This helps in understanding their vulnerabilities when performing radio tests and debugging implementation issues. This is followed by a review of IoT antennas, which are primarily small and cheap. Getting the best out of them requires careful siting and matching. Printed antenna design examples and some real-world examples of the pitfalls of integration are presented and discussed.
Various case studies are then presented with product examples employing Bluetooth, WiFi, Zigbee, Sigfox, GPS – including lessons learned, particularly about self-interference between circuit blocks and the radio section.
Finally, the course concludes with an overview of validating receive and transmit performance of IoT systems using RF test equipment.

The course is aimed at RF and hardware engineers designing, developing, integrating and testing devices for RF IoT applications or applications engineers supporting customers with RF IoT devices and integration. Technical managers involved in managing IoT development projects will also benefit from the course, which will enable them to better understand the various trade-offs and challenges involved in RF IoT device development.
