Revised and updated for 2017, this 2-day technical course provides a comprehensive introduction to antennas and propagation with a particular emphasis on modern RF and wireless device applications. The course describes and discusses a broad range of antenna types commonly found in modern RF, wireless and microwave systems – both fixed and mobile. Practical measurement demonstrations will be performed throughout the course on a wide range of antenna types to help reinforce the concepts introduced. Throughout the course, there will be plenty of opportunities to ask the instructor questions to help clarify understanding.

This is a technical course and the ability to assimilate and understand technical concepts is essential. A technical background is desirable in order to derive maximum benefit from the course. Participants would normally be qualified to degree level or have equivalent experience in an engineering, physics or mathematics-related subject. This technical course is aimed at individuals who are either directly involved in the specification or design of equipment embodying radio transmitters or receivers. Participants typically include RF design engineers, microwave design engineer, digital circuit design engineers and RF and wireless system-level design engineers.
Upon completion of this course, participants will be able to:
• Understand the significance of antenna specification parameters
• Measure some basic characteristics of antennas and transmission lines
• Understand propagation phenomena and their relation to circuit performance
• Understand the creation of a link budget
• Appreciate precautions that must be taken in the design of hardware using embedded antennas
