Doug Skinner MBE

altDoug Skinner is a Metrology Consultant with ADS in St. Albans, Hertfordshire, UK. He served in the Royal Air Force (RAF) as an Air Radar Fitter from 1950 to 1967. During this time, he taught basic electrical, radio and radar theory to aircraft apprentices at RAF Locking, Yatesbury and Cosford for 8 years.

In 1967, he joined Marconi Instruments as a Test Methods Engineer and in 1968 moved to the Measurement Standards Laboratory, a UKAS-Accredited Electrical Calibration Laboratory (formally NAMAS and BCS). He worked in the laboratory for over 30 years and was the Head of Laboratory from 1975 until his retirement in 1998.

Doug specialises in DC, low frequency, radio frequency (RF) and microwave measurements and also managing, training and advising calibration laboratory staff. Since 1998, he has worked as a consultant specialising in measurement uncertainties and preparation for laboratory accreditation. He is an active technical assessor for UKAS and other european and international accreditation organisations. He is also an adviser to UK government and a member of the BIS Physical Metrology Committee for National Measurement System.

Doug is currently joint editor of The IET book on Microwave Measurements (3rd Edition). He is also a Chartered Electrical Engineer and a Member of the Institution of Engineering Technology. Doug Skinner was awarded an MBE for services to the calibration industry in 1990.
