ATSC Modulation for Digital Terrestrial TV
Course Overview
This 1-day technical course explains the RF modulation aspects of the American Advanced Television Systems Committee (ATSC) digital TV transmission standard and outlines the functionality of a typical receiver front-end. It also discusses the RF performance testing of ATSC receivers.

Who Will Benefit?
The course is aimed at electronic and software engineers who may have some knowledge of European DVB transmission systems but are now developing, or are about to develop, digital TV hardware and/or software for the American market and require knowledge and understanding of the ATSC system. Although the course relates directly to the RF aspects of TV system design, it will also provide important understanding for engineers and managers working in any area of TV development.

Learning Outcomes

Upon completion of this course, participants will be able to:
  • Understand the RF sections of the ATSC standard (ATSC Doc. A/53)
  • Explain signal processing for ATSC (including coding, interleaving and 8-VSB modulation)
  • Understand testing and performance requirements for an ATSC receiver
  • Understand the DVB-T standard (EN 300-744)
  • Explain signal processing for DVB-T transmission
Business Benefits
The course will deliver the following business benefits:
  • Improved system performance due to better understanding of the ATSC system
  • Reduced design times and costs due to better understanding of the ATSC system
  • Reduced development costs due to improved supplier requirements specifications
  • Improved system quality and performance due to better understanding of how DTV systems work
  • Opportunity to utilise the extensive expertise of the instructor, with over 30 years of experience
Course Programme
The course content covers:
  • The complete top-level coding to decoding process as it applies to ATSC digital TV systems
  • Block coding, data interleaving and convolutional coding processes
  • Arrangement of data into segments, fields and frames
  • The 8-VSB modulation method
  • Front-end of a typical ATSC receiver
  • Introduction to RF performance testing for ATSC
Instructor
Detailed information about the course instructor is available on request.

Prerequisites
Participants would normally be qualified to degree level or equivalent in an electronic engineering, physics or mathematics-related subject. They should have some basic understanding of digital signal processing (i.e. what a ‘byte’ is, what ‘exclusive-or’ means) and an appreciation of basic radio modulation concepts (i.e. what ‘amplitude modulated carrier’ means). More detailed knowledge of digital communications engineering is not required, but would make the course relatively straightforward to follow.

Course Level
Intermediate: Assumes the participant has general knowledge of the subject and professional experience of the specific areas covered.

Course Venue
Delivered on-site either at customer premises or at any suitable venue throughout the UK, Europe and Rest
of the World.

Dates
Flexible according to your requirements.

What’s Included?
Course participants will each receive a set of high-quality course notes printed in full colour and a Certificate of Attendance.

Customisation
For on-site courses, we do not force your organisation to adopt a standard, ‘one-size-fits-all’ training programme. The standard course programme can be adapted both in content and duration according to your exact requirements and specifications. Our technical experts will assist you in identifying these, even if they are uncertain or unclear. The course programme is then fitted to your exact requirements. Please call us
on +44(0)1962 855 730 to discuss your requirements in more detail.

Related Courses
This course forms an ideal follow-on from the Introduction to Digital TV Coding and Modulation course (DVB1), which introduces digital TV coding and modulation techniques used in European DVB TV systems.
