Fundamentals of Digital TV Coding and Modulation
Course Overview
This 2-day technical course provides an introduction to the digital TV coding and modulation techniques used in European cable (DVB-C), satellite (DVB-S) and terrestrial (DVB-T) television systems. The course focuses on the transmission process, from the transport stream to the intermediate frequency (IF) signal, in preparation for channel conversion, amplification and transmission.

Who Will Benefit?
The course is aimed at electronic and software engineers with no prior knowledge of digital TV transmission systems, but are now developing, or are about to develop, hardware and/or software for these systems. It will also be of interest to technical managers and other staff requiring a good understanding of digital TV technology.

Learning Outcomes

Upon completion of this course, participants will be able to:
  • Explain the different requirements for cable, satellite and terrestrial digital TV transmission
  • Describe how transport stream data is coded and interleaved ready for modulation
  • Understand the meaning of 'code rate'
  • Understand QPSK and QAM modulation methods and how they are applied to DVB-S & DVB-C
  • Understand the COFDM modulation process for DVB-T
  • Explain the use of scattered and continuous pilots
  • Explain the meaning of IFFT size and Guard Interval in the context of COFDM
  • Understand how transmission robustness is influenced by chosen transmission parameters
  • Understand typical spectrum usage of cable, satellite and terrestrial digital TV systems
Business Benefits
The course will deliver the following business benefits:
  • Reduced design times and costs due to better understanding of digital TV systems
  • More competent liaison between design staff and tuner and demodulator suppliers
  • Improved software quality and system performance due to better DVB system understanding
  • Opportunity to utilise the extensive expertise of the instructor, with over 30 years of experience
Course Programme
The course content covers:
  • Format of the 'Transport Stream' feeding the transmission system
  • The top-level coding to decoding process as it applies to all digital TV systems
  • Special requirements for cable, satellite and terrestrial transmission
  • Block and convolutional coding and decoding processes
  • Various data interleaving processes
  • QPSK & QAM modulation methods used for DVB-S & DVB-C
  • COFDM modulation method used for DVB-T
  • Mapping of coded data to relevant modulation processes
Instructor
Detailed information about the course instructor is available on request.

Prerequisites
Participants would normally be qualified to degree level or equivalent in an electronic engineering, physics or mathematics-related subject. They should have some basic understanding of digital signal processing (i.e. what a 'byte' is, what 'exclusive-or' means) and an appreciation of basic radio modulation concepts (i.e. what 'amplitude modulated carrier' means). More detailed knowledge of digital communications engineering is not required, but would make the course more straightforward to follow.

Course Level
Introductory: Assumes the participant has little or no prior knowledge of the specific areas covered.

Course Venue
Delivered on-site either at customer premises or at any suitable venue throughout the UK, Europe and Rest
of the World.

Dates
Flexible according to your requirements.

What’s Included?
Course participants will each receive a set of high-quality course notes printed in full colour and a Certificate of Attendance.

Customisation
For on-site courses, we do not force your organisation to adopt a standard, ‘one-size-fits-all’ training programme. The standard course programme can be adapted both in content and duration according to your exact requirements and specifications. Our technical experts will assist you in identifying these, even if they are uncertain or unclear. The course programme is then fitted to your exact requirements. Please call us
on +44(0)1962 855 730 to discuss your requirements in more detail.

Related Courses
The course provides a firm grounding for more advanced courses on digital TV performance measurements (DVB4), hybrid TV front-end receiver design (DVB5) and the latest digital TV standards, such as DVB-T2 for high-definition TV (DVB7).
